The Easiest Tomato Sauce You’ll Ever Make

The Easiest Tomato Sauce You’ll Ever Make

Tomatoes! Tomates! Lycopene! Natural umami! It’s that glorious time of year in the Southern Hemisphere when tomatoes are cheap, ripe, and so good that sometimes I just slice one open, sprinkle salt on top, and eat it like a peach. But blink, and tomato season is gone—especially for me, since I’ll soon be trading Buenos Aires […]

Inflation’s a Bitch: What Food Costs in Buenos Aires Right Now

Is Buenos Aires still an affordable destination? Not in this economy. Here’s what you’ll pay for food, as of February 2025. A few days ago, a friend who used to live in Buenos Aires reached out to say he was coming back to visit. He mentioned he was trying to rent the same two-bedroom Palermo […]

The Porteño Pizza Renaissance

The Porteño Pizza Renaissance

Buenos Aires has always been a pizza city. But in my (mostly) humble opinion, it hasn’t always been delicious pizza. For years, lactose-intolerants were stuck with media masa, cheese-exuberant slices, a culinary rite of passage focusing on nostalgia rather than flavor. But something’s changed. Porteño pizza is having a renaissance, and I’m here for it. The other day, while wandering […]

ArgenYanqui Creations: Peanut Butter Chocotorta Recipe

Allow me to introduce one of my greatest culinary triumphs: a decadent treat that bridges the delicacies of my birthplace and my adopted home, born from the haze and delirium of late-night munchies. Please be obliged to meet the Frozen Peanut Butter Chocotorta, also known as the Frozen Peanut Butter Chococookie, also known as the […]

Supermarket Sweep: What to buy at the Russian Market

A few months ago, someone tipped me off about a Russian-owned supermarket in Balvanera rumored to carry all sorts of Eastern European delights: frozen dumplings like pierogis, pelmenis, varenikis, sour cream, sauerkraut, sausages, yogurt, Borodinsky dark rye bread, blintzes, and—the holy grail—COTTAGE CHEESE (!!!!). Now, I’ve been leading a crusade to bring real cottage cheese […]

36 Dishes Every Traveler Should Try in Buenos Aires

When it comes to food, Buenos Aires doesn’t do subtle. It’s a city that goes all in—grills overflowing with every cut of meat imaginable, pizzas smothered in molten cheese, and desserts dripping with dulce de leche. Recently, I had the challenge (and privilege) of narrowing down Buenos Aires’ essential dishes to just 12 for this […]

Picking Up the Fork, Again

After nearly three years of silence, Pick Up the Fork is back! Inspired by my recent SAVEUR Magazine article on the essential dishes of Buenos Aires, I’m diving back into the world of food blogging and reconnecting with the joy of sharing Buenos Aires’ culinary scene. Let’s talk stories, restaurants, and my chaotic return to blogging—because who needs TikTok when you can have good old-fashioned food content? – Written by ChatGPT.

Where to Eat in Buenos Aires: The Next Generation Pastry Hit List

There’s a certain realm that has truly shown oven-baked excellence over the last few years. I’m referring to buttery, warm, decadent, delicious fresh baked goods at cafés and bakeries – most of which are run by a new generation of bakers and pastry chefs.

Where to Eat in Buenos Aires: 5 Great New-ish Restaurants

Do people still read food blogs? Are we supposed to do substack newsletters now? Incessantly post on Instagram? Tweet threads? Make restaurant voice-over TikToks? Get into crypto NFTs on the metaverse? (I know the last one is nonsense, but somehow feels accurate.) I don’t think blogs are still a thing, but I’m feeling retro and […]

The Sarkis Experience: What to order at BA’s most popular restaurant

The Sarkis Experience: What to order at BA’s most popular restaurant

If you ever stood outside the corner of Thames and Jufré waiting over an hour for a table, you have already completed the first stage of the Sarkis Experience. The 250-seat Armenian restaurant on the Villa Crespo-Palermo border is open every day, for lunch and dinner, and almost always packed to capacity. Many will quibble whether or not Sarkis’ serves the best Middle Eastern food in the city, but I’m not going to engage in that debate because as one of the most popular and iconic spots in all of Buenos Aires, Sarkis deserves our respect.
