Prediction 2011: Frozen Yogurt Mania to hit Buenos Aires

Posted on August 15, 2010 18 Comments

Just so you all know, I am calling this one right now, Sunday, August 15, 2010, that the Summer ’11 Fro-Yo craze is about to SHAKE the B of A.  Not to be one of those assholes who needs to claim ownership, but I deserve credit for my findings.  I was right about my lemonade prediction back in 2006, Sushi trend in 2007, correct about the bagel fiasco in 2008, wraps, “American” style delis, iced tea, ethnic food, the list goes on…  If only I could patent one of these novelties, and open up something on my own, to actually use this sixth sense to my own monetary good.

Why do I think this is going to be the next big thing amongst porteña chetas and the extranjero clan?  Trends take a bit longer to reach Argieland.  Pinkberry and like stores swept across the states in a wave of frozen yogurt fun a few years ago, last year in Rio de Janeiro, I witnessed the popularity of a handful of different frozen yogurt shops – Yogenfruz, Yoggi, Yoforia, Yogolove, and Yogofresh.  The time has come to expand to Argentina, a “health” conscious culture where people are concerned about staying fit, looking good, but still eating all the crapola possible.  This “light” version of their favorite summer, spring, fall and winter pastime will no doubt be the cool thing to do, and if it’s an icecream like substance that is low in fat, and trendy, the argies will flock, trust me.

“No quiero un helado,” says the pretty porteña Palermonite, “dame un sho-gur FRRRO-ZIN porfa.”

Fro-Yo mania has already started, you see.  Freddo has just opened up a frozen yogurt counter in the dead of Palermo Soho (Malabia 1618).  And the Tentissimo (Diagonal Norte y Florida) chain of sandwich and ice cream shops have started a yogur helado campaign using ZOG.  Zog is a new brand of frozen yogurt, called Zogurt that might very well be a huge hit.  The verdict is out if it’s actually good, as I am way too cold to try it, but I will be back soon with my review.

Anyone interested in financing my business ventures?

Update:

Freddo is NAUSH!!! It tastes like 2 weeks old sour yogurt that has been put in the freezer, then left out for a while to melt.

Updates 2: Top It is the bomb.

I dunno, I am going to have to disagree with you. I definitely enjoyed top it over yoguberry. What i really miss from american froyo is the tart, slightly-icy taste. I don’t want to just have creamy, wannabee- soft ice cream (like at yoguberry).

Went to Topit yesterday. It was very good, but I have to stick with Yoguberry. They have more flavors, more toppings, and the Froyo is so much more creamy. I guess that the 10 minutes I waited in line for Yoguberry were worth it, crowd knows what is good. Nevertheless congrats to Topit cause it gives Froyo lovers a choice…..although peach yogurt is definitely not my favorite specially for these very heated months. yoguberrys original passion fruit swirl RULES!!!

I just heard about Top It on Facebook (it seems they recently made a page). I’m counting down the days until they open. A few of my friends know the owners and say it tastes incredible.

I told you!! Zog is not that much better either, at least for those who know their froyo. Actually, I have been snooping around the Alto Palermo rumor and it appears to be true. They are secretive about the whole thing but it is supposed to be the next big thing this summer. I looked around and I cant quite figure where and when this froyo shop will be opening, but my sources say it is pretty soon. Hopefully this one will have that perfect blend between tart and sweet and just the right creaminess. I am counting the days until I can get my hands around one of those perfect little cups filled with “healthy” yogurt spirals with a numerous array of toppings to choose from. I will keep you posted on these news.

I hear you….made that prediction myself last year!!! Spent a long time in SoCal an became obsessed with the frozen yogurt craze, so when I came to Buenos Aires I looked everywhere for it…. And ran upon the Freddo yogurt, which upon major investigation and serious taste bud challenging decided is AWFUL….tastes like Nesquick and is not yogurt AT ALL!!! More research led me to disover their macjine pasteurizes, which kills all tha bacteria and can therfore, not even be called yogurt. Also tried Zog. Tastes a little better but is very watery, icy and you have to wait very long because they only turn the machines on if there is a customer. Rumor has it there will be a new store openening this spring….. Placed in the ideal, as you call it, Yankeetown Alto Palermo. There is only hopi g that the yogurt is actually yogurt and they have given a second thought to decoration and that it resembles the oh so great (and dearly missed) Californian yogurt.

I haven’t tried Freddo yet but I had the suspicion that it wasn’t the real thing… but tasting like nesquick?? I guess I’m not surprised. Zog is my next try, but something about it doesn’t look like real frozen yogurt either. I heard that some of those Brazilian chains were looking to franchise to BA.. hopefully the Alto Palermo rumor is true with actual real frozen yogurt. If not, I guess it’s time to start a business….
