El Asado Más Grande Del Mundo

Posted on March 21, 2011 18 Comments

Yet another thing for Argentines to boast about, the town of General Pico in La Pampa has just won the Guinness World Record for the largest asado in the world!  With over 45 pairs of asadores (those who MAN the grill) and 13,713 kilos of meat, Argentina proudly took over Uruguay’s title set in 2008.  The mastermind behind the project, Argentine entrepreneur Ernesto “Tito” LOWENSTEIN, wanted to beat Uruguay’s mere 12,000 kilo asado and got together with colleagues to make it happen.

Here are some quick facts:

It wouldn’t be a true Argie event without a long line

* 13,713 kilos of asado and vacío

* 24,000 portions of asado were passed out to the people of General Pico

* 25,000 kilos of wood

* 950 cruces de asadores (metal crosses) that hold the entire carcass of the cow

* 90 asadores, 400 workers

Which hand will prepare my plate?! I hope it’s the sexy one with the stunned look on his face.

Coincidentally, March 20th is an important day for vegetarians as well: World Day Against Meat (Día Mundial contra la Carne), but to quote the La Nación newspaper, “Pero eso, acá, en medio de un festín de carne, no le importó a nadie.” That’s right, nobody gave a shit.

    ASADO: MEANS ROASTED OR GRILLED MEAT AND CHIMICHURRI MEANS ADOBO OR HERBS OF THE COUNTRY MIXED WITH VINEGAR ,OIL SALT,GARLIC AND HOT WATER TO ENHANCE THE HERBS FOR THE TASTE !! DRESS THE MEAT WITH CHIMICHURRI BEFORE GRILLING AND AFTER COOK BEFORE SERVED !! YES BESIDES THE PLATE HAS TO BE RED WINE STRAIGHT TO TRADITION ! IT MAY BE ACCOMPANIED WITH SALAD OF ANY TYPE OR ANY OTHER PREFERENCES LIKE GRILLED POTATOES ,CORN ,SWEET POTATOES,ETC. THE RIBS AND OTHER TYPE OF MEATS ARE GRILLED SLOW FOR THE TASTE AND MOIST OF THE MEAT ;ALSO NOT TO BE WELL DONE EITHER !! CONGRATS FOR SUCH AN ACHIEVEMENT AND GREAT FRIENDSHIP OCCASION ,ALSO TO LET US KNOW MORE ABOUT TRADITION STILL EXIST IN THE PAMPAS , ARGENTINA !!

    I was going to say the same thing. Who ate all this meat? Hopefully it did not go to waste, but sadly I would not be surprised if it did.

    I bet there were loads of leftovers. These people never calculate the right amount. They don’t mention that in the Guinness Book of Records.

      You are stupid if you think that we, Argentinians, won’t eat all that meat. All the city ate it, especially the people in need. Before speaking, study or travel a little bit. Not everything is the USA guys, you do that kind of thing, not us.

    Awesome article. Yeah, I remember when Uruguay set the new record a couple years ago…was wondering how long it would take for Argentinean pride to seek revenge. I hear they wanted revenge right away, but they had “fiaca” for a few years.

    @Katie-Cows are vegetarians. A unique way to celebrate the day…

    Ha! I wouldn’t have been surprised if they’d roasted a vegetarian right next to one of the giant meat carcasses, just for kicks. ;)
