Passport to Yanquiland: The Office Bar & Grill

Posted on April 3, 2011 23 Comments

Ordering a burger in Argentina can definitely be risky.  The grand beef myth that all meat reigns supreme halts at the traditional parrilla, with restaurants serving so called ‘burgers’ (processed Barfy or Paty brands) instead of good ole’ ground chuck.  In my quest to find a delicious burger I came across many Debbie Downers, “Don’t bother ordering a hamburger in Argentina, this country is strictly for steaks.” Thanks to the newly opened Las Cañitas Bar, The Office, I can finally prove these bitches wrong…WOMP WOMP in YO FACE.

A new addition to the expat bar scene, The Office (Arévalo 3031) not only is a place to hang out, drink, meet other foreigners (and foreign-friendly locals), but it serves damn good food.  This bar and grill is run by Alan Epstein, a US native who knows the importance of delivering authentic US bar food (he’s also known for bathing in the ranch dressing, that’s what gives it that special American tang).

How do I know that The Office has BOMB ass burgers?  Because I’ve tried almost every one, stuffing my face like a fat kid on Halloween.  These burgers have that char-sear I love so dearly, yet a juicy bite that dribbles down your chin.  The cute lil’ buns are baked fresh, tossed with sesame seeds and lightly toasted.  BBQ Bacon, California, Classic, Japanese, all burgers are bomb ass.

It’s also important to give honorable mention to the Cobb Salad, chicken wings and Quesadilla de pollo.  The salad had all the right components, but the dressing lacked a bit of umph – in fact I didn’t really taste it at all.  In contrast, the chicken wings BURSTED with flavor – absolutely delicious, smothered in a spicy Asian BBQ sauce. I’d definitely buy it if sold by the bottle.Dive into the brownie sundae, homemade brownie topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce.  The brownies happened to be really moist and flavorful, none of that hard, dry cake-like nonsense… the center was a bit raw, so it could have used a few more minutes in the oven, but I eat batter every chance I get.

Weekly movie showings on the terrace is always a plus as is special themed nights.  Mondays tend to be busy as there is a 50% discount on all burgers, chicken wings and quesadillas.

It’s refreshing to have a bar that is just purely buena onda – relaxed, comfortable atmosphere, not pretentious, with very attentive staff. Slight improvements need to be made so the food and drinks come out quicker, but I still dream inappropriately about those chicken wings and mini sliders.  For those craving burgers and familiar North American favorites, head over to Las Cañitas to dig into The Office.

they’ve gotten really bad. Twice we’ve went and had to wait over 40 minutes for our food. And was it crowded? no, only like 8 tables were there. Our waiter was a huge jackass. He forgot one of our dishes, I mentioned it, and he said “it’s not my fault” despite not having written our orders down. Then he tried to lay blame on the fact that he’s “busy.” 8 tables is busy? That’s a pretty sad excuse.

The 2nd time we went, and this is ultimately the last time we will go, after 40 minutes they brought out 2 burgers, and forgot the other 2. We complain, and then he asks if we would like to talk to the chef about the problem…seriously? There’s pretty few restaurants I’d like to see go to shit and this would be one of them.

Based on this review I went last week, only to find the place shut-down. I am sorry I missed the burgers and the experience. Please look for a replacement.

I almost froze to death in this place a few weeks ago. Was pleasantly surprised to see a veggie burger on the menu though.
My husband remains unconvinced, claiming to far prefer the burger at Randalls (have you had a chance to compare them yet?).
I’m still holding out hopes for a British place to open…with beans on toast and builder’s tea. There must be a market here!

This place never disappoints with the food. I do have one question though. How on earth did you Not get into some bacon/ranch/cheese fries? I guess they do deserve a blog post of their own…

I don’t know if I can trust a Chicagoan on finding a good burger! It is severely lacking as a burger city

You are severely lacking as a burger city.
Kuma’s, Billy Goat Tavern, Charlie Beinlich’s, Michael’s, Epic, just to name a few…

We went there this evening, shared onion rings and the way more than enough for two Desgustación. It was delicious, and a pleasant place to be on a warm Autumn evening. They were all great burgers / sliders. We both had one complaint — everything was too salty. So much salt that it dominated other flavors. When we want burgers, this is the place we’ll go. Plus, they open at 7, which is good for the American sense of supper time.
